Volz Takes Final Mod Race at Stateline
September 16, 2007
POST FALLS, IDAHO – Fresh off a win in Roseburg, Oregon, Spokane’s Frank Volz Jr. continued his winning ways scoring the win in the Northwest Modifieds 50-lap main event at Stateline Speedway Saturday. Marking the final race for the series at the track in 2007.
Â
Volz, who started on the outside of row one after the 8-car invert, quickly dueled past pole sitter Chris Ochs for the distinct lead by lap six after a side-by-side battle.
Â
At lap 27 Volz along with Ochs and quick qualifier Tim Sawyer caught lapped traffic. Volz, held up by a slower car, nearly lost the lead as the Ochs and Sawyer looked for the pass in turn four. Volz darted to the outside line to clear the lapped car; four laps latter to regain a strong lead.
Â
On lap 37 the only caution of the race flew for Zig Grunert’s slide to the infield.
Â
With the restart, Volz jumped to a huge lead while Sawyer took second. In the final laps Sawyer closed the gap to a car length but in the end Volz was able to take the win becoming the third different driver to win a Modified race this season at the speedway.
Â
Sawyer finished second, dash winner Justin Hoffman moved to third in the closing laps. Ochs, winner of the A heat, took fourth followed by Randy Lerch and Rick Gimeno.
Â
Ephrata’s Steve Covitt finished seventh. Dan Noble who crashed into the wall while leading a dash took eighth followed by B dash winner Don Webster. Shane Hesseltine won the B heat.
Â
Billy Swift passed heat and dash winner Tony Kempken and held off point leader Ned Pennington to claim the win in the 25-lap Hobby Stock main event. Swift also won the fast dash and heat. Ryen Tarr finished third, with Kyle Kennedy and Tyson Wilcox rounding out the top five.
Â
Justin Robideux continued his win streak in the Early Stocks winning the 20-lap season finale main event over Will Krasselt and Mike Robideaux. Ron Rohde who set fast time was running second but encountered mechanical problems halfway through the race.
Â
Next Saturday the Inland Northwest Super Stock Series return with season championships. Dave Garber looks for his first series title with Sandpoint’s Corey Allard in second. Five drivers are in the hunt for a series win. A strong contingent of Inland Northwest teams is expected for the season finale.
