Goodwin gets first win at Orange Show

July 1, 2007

orangeshowlogo-custom.jpgSAN BERNARDINO – Matt Goodwin finally made it to victory lane at Orange Show Speedway.

Goodwin, who has his father as his crew chief and his grandfather as his engine builder, came from 11th at the start to take the lead on the 24th of 30 laps, then held off class leader Jim Edmiston to win the ASA Stock Pony main event before a crowd of 2,357 Saturday night (June 30).

A winner twice during the exhibition Winter Series on the quarter-mile oval at the the National Orange Show Events Center, Goodwin was considered one of the drivers most likely to collect a win early in the season. Instead, the 18-year-old from Wildomar had to deal with the frustration of finishing second twice and third three times in the first seven races.

Saturday night, he avoided both traffic and trouble while working his way through the field and wasn’t bothered by the presence of former champions Edmiston and Jim Mardis en route to the checkered flag.

Tom Smith wasn’t bothered by much, either. The Lakewood resident spun on the first lap, but benefited from a yellow flag to take the lead on lap seven of 30 and kept his record perfect with his eighth win in as many races in the Lucas Oil Outlaw Figure 8 series.

Brian Malone of Grand Terrace moved his Palm Canyon Contractors Chevrolet Monte Carlo from fourth on the opening lap to first on lap five and stayed there for the remainder of the 35-lap BSR West Late Model main event. It was the second win of the season for Malone, 39, who had class leader Jim Conklin’s Pontiac Grand Prix filling his rear-view mirror for the final 30 laps.

The Conklin family did get one win, however, thanks to the victory by younger brother Cliff Conklin (he’s 50 and Jim is 53) in a Street Stock main cut from 30 to 20 laps because of repeated incidents.

Bree Brewer, 17, started on the pole and led all the way to win the 30-lap Legends Cars main event and increase her lead in the point standings. The win was the second in a row and fourth in five races for the Riverside driver.

National Orange Show officials have cancelled the Fourth of July Fireworks show so there will be no racing at Orange Show Speedway next week. Racing will resume of July 14.
