Hoagland gives Sinister Motorsports a Pony Stock win
May 14, 2007
SAN BERNARDINO – Bill Hoagland was ready to settle for a third-place finish in Saturday night’s (May 12) Stock Pony main event at Orange Show Speedway. Instead, the Sinister Motorsports driver wound up in the winner’s circle after leaders Matt Goodwin and Eddie Secord tangled on the last of the 25 laps. Secord, who represents Sinister Motorsports in the Pro 4 and SRL Late Model divisions, was making a rare start in the Pony class and Hoagland was a late fill-in for team leader Marty Timm.
Secord set fast time in qualifying and won a heat race and Hoagland won the Trophy Dash. Then in the main event both were chasing Goodwin, until Secord and the leader got together in Turn 2 on the final lap. The collision resulted in Goodwin spinning and Secord taking the lead, and the checkered flag. But race officials ruled Secord at fault in the incident and placed him last on the lead lap. That left him 11th in the final order of finish.
“This is a great car,” Hoagland said of the Ford Mustang. “The car got through the middle of the turns better than anyone out here. We were looking at third, but we’ll take the win.”
